Marty Mauser is a young man living in 1952 New York City. Working as a shoe salesman for his uncle, Marty dreams of making it big in the world of competitive table tennis, an aspiration many find laughable. Brash, bold, and having an affair with his married childhood sweetheart, Marty brushes it off, determined to succeed no matter what. Finding himself spurned the money he needs to compete in the British Open, Marty steals it and makes his way to London. There, his rash behaviour sets off a series of interwoven events that will take him across the world, clashing against all sorts of characters as he relentlessly pursues his ultimate dream.
